It’s about Ed’s Grandpa who had Alzheimer’s and died this past December. The song is basically about how Ed’s grandpa never fully knew who he (Ed) was but who he (his grandpa) really was was carried on by what Ed’s grandmother told him. Throughout the song you hear about Ed’s grandparents’ love story through his grandma’s own words and we’re able to understand the man that Ed only really got to know through the stories of his past. It’s a celebration of life, love and even death really, He’s acknowledging the sadness in it but also the beauty that was once there and the genuine yet passionate love that his grandparents shared
I could see that but I think at this point he definitely has deeper connection to Afire Love because who it’s about and the fact the event is still pretty recent
